That was good.
Unfortunately, I'm on the other side of that coin. Intelligent, but unmotivated. But self-aware enough to realise that in high-school, which was a godsend. If you find yourself on my side of the coin, then the best advice I can give you is specialise. Specialise in the thing that interests you most and win it.
It's also good if you're not that intelligent, but motivated. My best friend was a good study, but didn't perform that well in tests and barely scraped through for uni acceptance for a BSc. But, he specialised, and now he's done his doctorate, been offered his Masters and he works at the CSIRO. Only 27 and he's one of the world's foremost experts on solar technology.
I on the other hand wanted to fly. My aim was to join the RAAF as a transport pilot and then go to commercial airlines once my stint was up. I specialised in the mathematical sciences – Physics, Chemistry, Engineering. I got the scores I needed and spent three years in the recruiting process for pilot, air navigator (AWO) and then tower control. I continued scaling back the position in the hopes of getting in and then bridging from there as the years passed. I learned about government bureaucracy and eventually, quit my job at the factory I was working at and got an traineeship at an advertising agency. A few weeks after starting at the agency, I got another callback from the ADF and told them to get fucked (nicely).
Almost 8 years on, I'm now a Copywriter. The only mediums I haven't written for are Cinema and Skywriting. I love my job, I get paid many thousands of dollars to tell people stories. Plus, it gives me an excuse to harass people about their spelling.
I tell you this because it doesn't always matter if things work out either. There's always another way to get where you wanted to go, or something else that you might even enjoy more that what you thought you wanted. In school they make it sound like if you get it wrong now you're fucked forever, but it the real world, no one gives a shit how well you did in your final exams.
But, you know, if a decent war breaks out, I'll join up.
